Drum Castle Rose Garden

The rose garden at Drum Castle sits behind one of Scotland's oldest tower houses, and it's genuinely worth stopping for if you're touring Aberdeenshire. You get maybe 200 varieties on display - nothing Instagram-mad about it, just proper rose beds laid out with actual care. The smell in June and July is something else, particularly in the early morning before tourists arrive.

Walking through feels intimate rather than grand. The castle itself dominates the space, all grey stone rising up behind the flowers, which somehow makes the garden feel more like a secret than a showpiece. It's the sort of place where 45 minutes feels right - long enough to see everything without feeling rushed, short enough that you won't overstay your welcome.

History types will appreciate the whole setup: the castle dates back to the 13th century, and the garden was properly established in the Victorian era. Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet and slow-paced, though older children who actually like plants will get something from it.

Nearest town is Upper Anguston, though Banchory is probably your best bet for supplies and a decent lunch afterwards. If you're basing yourself at Silverbank Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this is a natural half-day outing. Check ahead for opening times and entry fees - they do vary seasonally. Go when the roses are actually in flower; visiting in winter is pointless.
