Dragon's Teeth

You'll spot them long before you reach them - a jagged line of stone teeth jutting up from the moorland near North Yorkshire like something prehistoric left behind. Dragon's Teeth is a proper bit of landscape history, these weathered rock formations that really do look like they've been gnawed by something enormous. The walk out there across open moorland is the thing though. It's not strenuous, but it's exposed enough to feel like an actual expedition rather than a casual stroll.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The moorland setting makes it brilliant for photography, especially when the light's coming in low, and it's the kind of place that rewards you for bothering to find it rather than just driving past. Kids might find it interesting for ten minutes, but there's nothing to do when you arrive - no café, no visitor centre, no little museum explaining what you're looking at. Just rocks and views.

If you're basing yourself at Centenary Way Camping and Caravan Park, it's barely over a mile away, which makes it an ideal late afternoon walk before tea. Haven Primrose Valley is a bit further at 2.2 miles but still within easy reach. Both parks offer proper facilities if you need somewhere comfortable to stay while exploring the moorlands. The rocks are free to access and you can visit anytime, though early morning or just before dusk gives you the best light. Budget an hour including the walk there and back, longer if you want to sit about and take photographs.
