Standing 25 feet tall beside the A638 just outside Retford, this steel sculpture catches you completely off guard. The Dragon - as locals simply call it - is a modern artwork that's become something of an unofficial landmark for the area, though don't expect ancient folklore or medieval ruins.

Crafted from weathering steel that's developed a proper rusty patina over the years, it's more abstract than fearsome. Kids will spot it from the car and demand a photo stop, which is about all the time you'll need here. Five minutes max, unless you're particularly taken with contemporary sculpture.

Walkers following the Chesterfield Canal towpath often stumble across it during longer rambles, and it makes for a decent waymarker. The surrounding farmland isn't particularly scenic, mind you - this is working countryside rather than picture-postcard stuff.

Families staying at nearby Wild Acre Village or Sundown Adventureland could easily swing by for a quick look, though it's hardly worth planning your day around. Better combined with a canal walk or as part of the drive to somewhere else. Free to view, naturally, and always accessible from the roadside.

Honestly, it's one of those things that's either completely your cup of tea or leaves you wondering what the fuss is about. Worth a glance if you're passing, but don't make a special journey.
