Dragon Hill

The walk up Dragon Hill from Wantage takes about forty minutes if you're not rushing, and the reward is a proper viewpoint across the Vale of White Horse. It's a chalk hill with a flattened top - legend has it St George slew the dragon here, which is why nothing grows on that bare patch. Whether you believe the mythology or not, it's a cracking spot for getting your bearings across Oxfordshire.

The summit sits at just over 500 metres, so it's not a gruelling climb, making it ideal for families who want a bit of a hike without the full day commitment. The views stretch for miles on clear days - you can see right across to the Berkshire Downs if the weather's on your side. Give yourself two hours total including the return journey and time to sit and take it in.

It works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at one of the local glamping spots. Evelyns Garden Glamping is only two miles away, so you could easily knock this out before heading to one of the bigger Oxfordshire attractions. The hill's freely accessible year-round, though winter can get muddy underfoot. Best avoided immediately after heavy rain unless you don't mind a bit of slipping and sliding.
