A single tree marks the spot where Dr J Stirling made his mark on this corner of County Antrim. It's a modest memorial in a working nature reserve - nothing grand, nothing theatrical. Just a tree, planted to honour someone who clearly mattered to the local community, standing quietly among the native woodland and open grassland that makes this reserve worth seeking out.

The reserve itself is the real draw. Walking here feels properly away from things despite being just outside Antrim town. You get rough paths through mixed habitats - scrub, grassland, woodland - where locals come to spot birds and spot whatever wildlife happens to be about. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow amble rather than a rushed visit. Half an hour minimum, but you could easily stretch that to ninety minutes if you're into your nature.

Histor types and walkers will find more here than families with young children, if I'm honest. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no interpretation boards spelling everything out. You're expected to simply walk and observe. That's its charm, but also its limitation - kids get bored without signposts and activities.

The memorial tree sits within the larger nature reserve system, making it a worthwhile add-on if you're already in the area. Six Mile Water Caravan Park and Blair's Castlewood Holiday Park both sit within striking distance, so it slots nicely into a broader park-based break exploring the reserves and greenspaces around Antrim. Free to visit, naturally. Go early morning for the best chance of spotting anything.
