Dowsborough Fort

Dowsborough Fort sits on a ridge above Holford, a Somerset village that most people drive through without looking twice. What you're actually climbing to is an Iron Age hillfort - think concentric earthworks, ditch systems, and views across the Quantocks that make the slog worthwhile. The fort itself dates back around 2,500 years, and while there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to hold your hand, the bones of the place are still readable if you know what you're looking at.

The walk up takes twenty minutes from the car park area near Holford, and it's genuinely lovely once you're up there. The ramparts are substantial enough that you can trace where the ancient defensive lines ran, and on a clear day the views justify the effort alone. History enthusiasts will spend longer working out the layout, but families with reasonable walkers won't struggle - kids seem to enjoy the scramble aspect more than the archaeology bit, if I'm honest.

There's no charge, no facilities, and no faffing about. Just turn up, park sensibly, and head up. The best time is early morning or late afternoon when you've got the ridge to yourself. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Haven Doniford Bay or Secret Valley are your closest options - this makes a proper half-day outing combined with exploring Holford itself. It's not flashy archaeology, but it's the real thing.
