Downs Plantation

Downs Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Kidderminster - the sort of place you stumble upon when you're exploring the quieter corners of Worcestershire rather than hunting for it specifically. The forest itself is dense and manageable, with decent paths threading through mature trees that give proper shelter even on drizzly days. You're looking at a decent couple of hours if you want to take it slowly, maybe an hour if you just want to tick it off.

It's ideal for walkers who don't need everything signposted and sanitised. Families with older kids will find it straightforward enough - there's nothing dramatic about it, but that's partly the appeal. No crowds, no visitor centre with overpriced snacks, just trees and the occasional unexpected clearing. Younger children might lose interest after a bit, if I'm honest.

The woodland sits well within striking distance of the caravan parks dotted around the area - Lickhill Manor, Walshes Farm, and the others are all within six miles, making it a decent option for a morning out if you're staying nearby. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's the kind of walk that feels proper and unpretentious. Bring wellies if there's been recent rain - the ground can get boggy in patches. No entry fees that I could find, which means you can turn up whenever suits you. Worth the detour? If you're already in the area, absolutely. Worth planning a trip around? Probably not on its own.
