Downhills Park

Just east of London, Downhills Park is a proper nature reserve that punches above its weight. Walking the trails here, you'll find yourself surrounded by woodland and open grassland - the sort of place where you half expect to spot something interesting around every corner. The reserve spans enough ground to keep you occupied for a solid couple of hours if you're keen on spotting birds and insects, though an hour's gentle ramble works too.

It's ideal for families who want to tire the kids out without driving for hours, or for anyone doing a walking break from the city. Birdwatchers especially will find plenty to keep them entertained, particularly during migration seasons. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though you'll want proper shoes if the ground's wet.

The main appeal here is the chance to see nature at work without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. There's a real sense of getting away from Greater London's sprawl, which is saying something when you're only a few miles from town. If you're camped at Lee Valley Campsite in Sewardstone, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon excursion - it's barely a twenty-minute drive away.

The reserve is free to access, which is always a bonus. Timing-wise, early morning offers the best chance of spotting wildlife, and spring through to autumn is when things really come alive. Don't expect facilities or cafes - bring what you need with you.
