Downe Bank SSSI

The chalk grassland slopes at Downe Bank near Warlingham feel like stepping into something almost forgotten. This Site of Special Scientific Interest sits quiet and unassuming, but spend half an hour here in late spring and you'll understand why conservationists get excited about the place.

It's proper grassland walking - gentle slopes covered in downland flora that changes with the seasons. You're looking at wild orchids in May and June, chalk-loving plants that simply don't exist elsewhere, and the kind of insect life that makes an afternoon here genuinely absorbing. The views across the North Downs aren't dramatic, but they're restful in the way that matters.

Best suited to nature enthusiasts and walkers who prefer quiet spots over honeypot trails. Kids might find it a bit sparse unless they're into spotting butterflies and beetles - it's not a playground kind of place. Families based at nearby Milberry Green Meadows would do well to combine this with a longer walk through the surrounding countryside rather than visit in isolation.

Allow an hour or so for a proper wander. There's no visitor infrastructure that I could find, so come prepared with water and decent shoes. The ground can be boggy after rain despite the chalk. Spring and early summer are obviously the peak seasons, but honestly, the peace and wildflower mix make it worth visiting almost any time of year. Free access, thankfully - one of Surrey's quieter nature reserves that deserves more recognition.
