Dover Castle

The white cliffs aren't the only reason to come to Dover. Perched above them sits a proper fortress - eight centuries of English military history compressed into one sprawling castle that actually feels lived-in rather than museum-sterile.

You're walking through medieval gateways, climbing the Keep - that thick Norman tower that dominates everything - and suddenly you understand why invaders never quite managed it. The views across the Channel are extraordinary, and on a clear day you're looking straight at France. The Secret Wartime Tunnels underneath are the real draw for most visitors: a warren of passages carved into the chalk where the RAF coordinated the Battle of Britain. It's atmospheric, occasionally claustrophobic, and genuinely absorbing.

Historically minded adults will spend three to four hours here without rushing. Families with primary-school kids should allow the same, though the tunnels might spook younger ones. Teenagers either love the military stuff or find it a bit dry - depends entirely on the teenager.

It's managed by English Heritage, so expect admission charges and summer crowds. Worth visiting mid-week if you can. The castle works brilliantly as part of a wider Kent coast trip - you're right next to Dover town and within easy reach of the caravan parks at St Margaret's Bay and Kingsdown. If you're basing yourself at one of those, this fills a decent afternoon without needing to venture far. Not a quick tick-box visit, this one - come when you've got proper time.
