Dog Kennel Row is a proper woodland walk tucked into the rolling Hampshire countryside between Alresford and the darker folds of the forest beyond. It's a working forest where you'll find yourself on well-maintained tracks surrounded by mature trees - the kind of place that feels genuinely wild without requiring an ordnance survey and a packed lunch.

This isn't a destination you queue up for. It's more a serious stretch of legs if you're based in the area or passing through. The walk itself meanders through dense woodland with patches of light breaking through the canopy. In spring and summer it's lovely; autumn's probably best when the light gets low and golden. Winter can be muddy and dark.

Families with kids who actually like walking - not those after a twenty-minute stroll and an ice cream - will get decent value here. The trails aren't particularly challenging, though you'll want proper boots after rain. History types won't find much to scratch that itch; this is forestry, not heritage. What you get is space, quiet, and that peculiar sense of being genuinely removed from anywhere.

If you're staying at Hampshire Hills just four miles away, this is the sort of place to fill a morning or afternoon without fanfare. It's free, as far as I can tell, though facilities are minimal - no café, no visitor centre, no amenities really. That's either the charm or the problem depending on your tolerance for rougher woodland. Bring a map or a decent phone signal. The locals know it; tourists mostly don't.
