Docton Mill Gardens & Tea Rooms

The mill itself is long gone, but what remains at Docton is a proper gem - a series of water gardens that cascade down a wooded valley just outside Bideford. You're looking at ponds, streams, and landscaped beds that actually feel like someone's private sanctuary rather than a tourist attraction. The whole place has that slightly overgrown, romantic quality that makes you want to linger with a camera.

It's best suited to anyone who walks slowly. Not for rushing through - you'll miss the point entirely if you're hurrying between the tea rooms and the car park. Families with young children will find enough to keep them occupied for an hour or so; the water features are the draw, and there's something about ducks and small bridges that holds their attention. Serious gardeners will appreciate the planting, though it's not a horticultural showcase - more of a personal, eclectic collection.

The tea rooms are genuinely decent. Worth stopping for, not just an afterthought. Allow a couple of hours if you're combining it with a proper browse and refreshments.

Geographically, it slots nicely into a wider North Devon loop. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Coastal Cabins or Atlantic Horizons are both close by - Docton works as a gentle morning activity before heading to Bideford's quay or pushing further along the coast.
