Dixon Woods

You won't find Dixon Woods listed in many guidebooks, which is precisely why it's worth the drive from Cleethorpes. This is proper Lincolnshire woodland - the kind of place where locals walk their dogs and families let their kids run loose between the trees without worrying about crowds.

The woods themselves are unremarkable in the way that English countryside often is: a mix of native broadleaves and conifers, well-maintained paths that don't require proper hiking boots, and enough space to feel genuinely away from things despite being only a few miles inland from the coast. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no entrance fee that I could find. You just turn up and walk.

It's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're already staying at Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park and fancy a break from sand and amusement arcades. Forty minutes to an hour gives you time for a decent loop without committing to a full afternoon expedition. Kids will enjoy spotting wildlife and climbing fallen logs; walkers will appreciate the peace; history buffs won't find much, but everyone else will simply appreciate the simplicity of it.

Go mid-morning on a weekday if you can. Weekends bring families doing the same thing, which is fine, but the magic - if there is any - lies in having the paths mostly to yourself. It's not dramatic. It's not Instagram-friendly. It's just a wood. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
