Ditcheat Hill

The walk up Ditcheat Hill rewards you with proper 360-degree views across Somerset's rolling countryside. It's not a mountain - more of a determined hike that takes the better part of an hour to get to the top - but the payoff is absolutely worth the effort.

From the summit you're looking out towards Castle Cary and beyond, with the landscape stretching away in waves of green and gold depending on the season. On a clear day you can see remarkably far. The path itself is straightforward enough, though it can get muddy underfoot after rain, so bring decent boots.

This is ideal for walkers who want proper exercise without needing technical gear or ropes. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage fine, though younger ones might find the slog a bit tedious. History types will appreciate that the hill has been a vantage point for centuries - you're literally walking the same routes locals have used forever.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up top, so pack water and maybe a snack. Go early morning if you want the best light and fewest people. Summer weekends bring crowds, but weekday visits feel genuinely peaceful.

If you're based at either Hadspen Glamping or Tall Trees Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning's walk before lunch back at your site. Combines beautifully with exploring Castle Cary village itself - you're only a few miles away.
