Diss Park

Diss Park is a proper Norfolk nature reserve that sits right on the edge of town, close enough to walk from Eye but remote enough that you'll forget the high street exists. The park centres on a glacial mere - essentially a big, deep freshwater lake surrounded by woodland, reed beds, and rough grassland that changes entirely depending on the season.

What you actually do here is walk. There are paths threading through different habitats, and if you've got binoculars, the birdwatching is genuinely decent. Winter brings visiting wildfowl; spring and summer see warblers and breeding waterbirds. The lake itself is the real draw - it's properly atmospheric, especially on grey days when the water mirrors the sky and there's barely another soul about.

It's ideal for anyone who wants to stretch their legs without a destination in mind. Families with older children will get more from it than toddlers - there's nothing showy, no playground nonsense, just quiet observation. Walkers and nature types will spend a couple of hours easily; casual visitors might manage forty minutes before heading back to town for tea.

Free to visit, as far as we can tell. If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Applewood Countryside Holidays or Hill Farm Suffolk are both five or six miles away - it's a worthwhile detour on a morning walk, though it's not the sort of place that justifies a special trip on its own. Goes well with the broader Norfolk landscape if you're already in the area.
