Dinton Pastures Country Park

The lakes at Dinton Pastures aren't what you'd expect near Wokingham. For a country park squeezed between suburban roads, it's genuinely impressive - three substantial water bodies with proper walking paths threading between them, reed beds thick with birdlife, and enough open grassland to actually breathe.

You're looking at around two to three hours for a decent circuit, depending on pace and how often you stop to watch the waterfowl. Bring binoculars if you're remotely into birds - the kingfishers alone make it worth the trip. The walks are flat and well-maintained, so it works brilliantly for families with younger kids who'd find serious hiking a slog. There's also a visitor centre, though facilities can be basic depending on when you visit.

Historically minded visitors might find the gravel extraction heritage interesting - these lakes are the byproduct of quarrying, turned into something actually rather lovely. It's the kind of place that sneaks up on you: looks unpromising from the car park, then opens up into something genuinely absorbing.

If you're based at California Chalet or Scotlands House - both within 5 miles or so - this fills a morning nicely without requiring a proper expedition. It's free and informal, which means it can get a bit crowded on weekends. Go weekday if you can. Winter and spring are best for birdwatching, though summer's pleasantly green if you don't mind the mugginess. Proper local spot, this, and worth the detour if you're in the area.
