Dinas Head

The walk out to Dinas Head from Newport takes about forty minutes each way, and it's one of those coastal paths that justifies every step. You're trudging along clifftop terrain with the Irish Sea properly spread out below you, and on a clear day the views stretch across to Cardigan Island. The headland itself is a proper working lighthouse spot - functional rather than fancy, which somehow makes it better. There's a narrow footbridge that gets you across to the actual peninsula, and that's where it gets interesting. The geology is dramatic: sheer drops, dark rock, and the kind of isolation you don't expect this close to civilisation.

Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here. It's not a casual twenty-minute stroll - you need decent boots and a decent level of fitness - but the payoff is genuine. Families with younger kids might find the full round trip exhausting, though a partial walk to the viewpoint and back works fine. The weather matters enormously. I've seen it on a grey day when the whole thing felt a bit bleak, and on bright days when it's genuinely stunning.

It's free to access, and there are no facilities up there so bring water. Allow at least two hours for the full experience. If you're based at any of the local holiday parks - Fishguard Bay Resort is closest at two miles - this should be on your list. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to Pembrokeshire in the first place.
