Dinah Bank Wood

Walking into Dinah Bank Wood feels like stepping into something properly wild. This North Yorkshire forest sits just outside Northallerton and offers the kind of shelter you're grateful for when the weather turns - tall trees, good footpaths, and enough green to make you forget the market town's only a couple of miles away.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a destination with bells and whistles. You get mature trees, decent paths that don't require serious boots, and the sort of quiet that's hard to find near towns. Walkers will find it genuinely useful - a solid hour or so if you meander, quicker if you're just after a leg-stretch. Families with younger kids won't be bored, though there's nothing theme-park-ish about it. Just trees and air.

The wood works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a park stay at either Whorlton Pods or Cote Ghyll, both just up the road. Pop in for a morning walk before heading back for lunch, or use it to burn off energy before an afternoon elsewhere. Free to enter, naturally - it's a proper woodland, not a visitor centre.

Best visited when dry underfoot, which in Yorkshire means you take your chances. Autumn's lovely if the leaves cooperate, but honestly, it's the kind of place that does its job whatever the season. Nothing fancy, nothing pretentious. Just a decent bit of forest doing what forests do.
