Diddington Wood

The woodland around Diddington, just east of Huntingdon, is proper walking country. Ancient trees, open glades, and the kind of quiet you don't often find this close to civilization. It's a straightforward forest - no admission fees, no visitor centre, just you and the woods.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths wind through mixed woodland and are accessible enough for most fitness levels, though the ground can be boggy in winter. Families with younger kids might find an hour here enough before restlessness sets in; older children who actually enjoy being outdoors will easily spend a couple of hours exploring. Birdwatchers and photography types should come early, before the mid-morning dog-walking crowds.

There's no specific best time, though autumn when the canopy turns is worth timing a visit around. Spring brings nesting birds and bluebells. Summer can feel thick and insecty in places.

Practically, it costs nothing and there's nowhere official to park that I can find - you'll need to be respectful about where you leave the car. Allow between one and three hours depending on how much you want to potter about.

For a park-based holiday, it complements the nearby sites well. Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club is just 2.2 miles away and perfect for basing yourself, while St Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site, 4.4 miles south, offers another solid option. The woodland works as a morning walk before heading to Grafham Water itself for something more active.
