Dibden Inclosure

The New Forest's Dibden Inclosure is one of those quiet corners that locals know about but rarely make it onto tourist radars - which is precisely why it's worth the trip from Southampton. This is proper woodland walking territory, with dense beech and oak, plus an impressive population of fallow deer that you'll spot if you're lucky and move quietly enough.

It's a nature reserve rather than a visitor attraction with facilities, so go in with realistic expectations. There are decent footpaths threading through, though nothing particularly dramatic or long - most people spend an hour to ninety minutes wandering about. If you're coming from Lepe Beach Campsite up the road, this makes a natural pairing: beach morning, forest afternoon. The canopy is thick enough that it's genuinely cool on hot days, which counts for something in summer.

Historically it's part of the old royal forest system, though you won't find interpretation boards or visitor centres. That's the trade-off here - you get authentic woodland without the crowds. Birdwatchers will find it more rewarding than casual strollers. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after the first mile, but children who like spotting wildlife could easily spend longer.

Free access, no car park fee as far as I can tell. Best visited in spring when the floor's alive with bluebells, or autumn when the colours are working. Winter's a bit bleak and muddy unless you're genuinely keen on that sort of thing.
