Devonshire Park

The Devonshire Park reserve near Bideford is one of those places where you genuinely lose track of time. Woodland paths loop through mature trees, opening occasionally onto grassland where you'll spot butterflies and the odd bird of prey if you're lucky. It's properly wild without being remote - you're never more than a few minutes from the car park, which means families with younger legs won't mutiny halfway through.

What makes it work is the mix. You get genuine nature reserve vibes - information boards, proper footpaths, the sense you're somewhere that matters ecologically - but it never feels like a chore to walk around. The grassland areas are where you'll do most wildlife spotting, and spring through autumn is absolutely the time to visit. Winter's fine if you don't mind muddy boots and bare branches.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing more than a quick stroll. There's no obvious visitor centre or café that I could find, so bring a flask if you're making an afternoon of it. Families with kids aged five upwards will get real value here - it's engaging without requiring a huge attention span.

If you're based at Owl Valley Glamping or Broad Park just down the road, this fills a morning brilliantly before heading into Bideford proper for lunch. The proximity to proper accommodation makes it feel less like a day-tripper spot and more like a genuine local discovery - which, honestly, is what makes nature reserves worth your time.
