Devils Punchbowl

The ground simply drops away. One moment you're walking across the Berkshire downs, the next you're staring into a dramatic natural amphitheatre - a proper crater carved into the landscape, steep-sided and somehow both unsettling and magnificent. The Devil's Punchbowl is exactly what it sounds like: a deep natural hollow, the kind of place that demands you stop and stare for longer than feels reasonable.

It's not a typical attraction with a visitor centre or gift shop. There's no queue, no entrance fee. You just pitch up, park near Wantage, and walk to the edge. The views across the Berkshire downland are genuinely excellent, especially on a clear day - you can see for miles. The bowl itself was shaped by chalk extraction over centuries, though the name suggests altogether darker origins. Kids find the sheer scale of it absorbing, though it won't occupy you for hours. Most people spend fifteen to thirty minutes photographing and wondering how deep it actually goes.

Walkers get the most from it. The surrounding downs offer proper rambling - combine it with a longer route and you've got a solid morning out. The landscape is quietly impressive without being showy. Bring decent boots; the ground can be muddy even after light rain.

Stay nearby at Evelyns Garden Glamping or Lorne Hill Farm, both highly rated, and the Punchbowl becomes part of a larger downland day. It's the sort of place that doesn't Instagram well but stays with you. Worth the drive if you're already in the area. Don't make a special trip from London.
