Devils Churchyard

The Devils Churchyard near Stroud is a proper archaeological oddity - a Bronze Age burial ground tucked into the Gloucestershire countryside that most visitors to the area walk straight past without realising. It's not dramatic or visitor-friendly in the modern sense. You won't find interpretation boards or a car park. What you get instead is a hillside scattered with burial mounds, some obvious, others barely visible under the grass and trees. The site dates back around 3,500 years, which puts it in perspective when you're standing there.

History buffs will find it genuinely interesting, particularly if you're already exploring the Cotswolds' archaeological landscape. It's the sort of place where you can actually feel the age of things rather than just read about it. However, families with young children might find it underwhelming - there's little to do beyond looking at bumps in the ground and imagining what lies beneath.

Allow 30 minutes maximum, longer if you're genuinely absorbed in Bronze Age Gloucestershire. The site is freely accessible as far as we know, though conditions underfoot can be muddy depending on the season. It works well as a short detour when camping at Tobacconist Farm Campsite, which sits just a mile and a half away, or as part of a wider walk through the Stroud valleys. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see the landscape properly - on grey, damp afternoons it feels a bit too much like standing in someone's overgrown garden.
