Deuchrie Dod

The walk up Deuchrie Dod from near Dunbar takes about forty minutes if you're not pushing hard, and you'll spend most of it on a decent path that doesn't pretend to be anything steeper than it actually is. The summit sits at 260 metres - hardly alpine, but high enough to give you proper views across the Firth of Forth and back towards the Lammermuir Hills. On a clear day you can see the Bass Rock from up there, which never gets old.

This isn't a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours. It's the kind of walk you do if you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park and the weather's playing ball, or if you're passing through East Lothian and fancy stretching your legs without committing to anything serious. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine. Walkers wanting a quick morning outing before heading elsewhere will appreciate how straightforward it is.

The real value is that it's genuinely free and doesn't require any planning beyond pulling on your boots. No visitor centre, no admission fees, no faffing about with opening hours. Go whenever suits you. The path's well-maintained enough that you won't be scrambling or swearing at bracken, and the views justify the climb without making you feel like you've trudged somewhere pointless. If you're based around Dunbar for a week, it's worth doing once. Don't make it your only walk though - the coastline nearby has better things to offer.
