Des Phippen Park

The Somerset levels around Burnham-on-Sea can feel a bit bleak if you don't know where to look, but Des Phippen Park changes that entirely. This nature reserve is a proper surprise - wet grassland and woodland that's absolutely alive with birds, particularly in winter when you'll spot snipe, wigeon, and if you're lucky, the occasional bittern booming across the water at dusk.

The walking tracks are straightforward enough, nothing demanding, and you can easily spend a couple of hours here without feeling rushed. Bring binoculars. Seriously. The birdwatching is what makes this place, and you'll see far more with decent optics than without. Spring and autumn migration periods are particularly good, though summer's quieter if you prefer solitude.

It works well as a half-day excursion from Laurel Farm Glamping just down the road - close enough that you won't waste time driving, far enough that you feel like you've actually gone somewhere. The landscape is flat and open, which some find meditative and others find a bit bleak, depending on the weather. On a grey February afternoon with the wind cutting across the levels, it's genuinely atmospheric. Come summer, it's pleasant but less distinctive.

Not a destination that'll occupy a full day on its own, but if you're based nearby and enjoy quiet wildlife watching without the visitor centre crowds, it's well worth a morning's exploration.
