Derwentcote Steel Furnace

A squat stone structure rising from the riverside near Derecroft, Derwentcote Steel Furnace is one of the oldest surviving examples of its kind in Europe. Built in 1688, it's the real deal - not a reconstruction or a museum piece, but the actual furnace where they heated and worked steel for centuries. What strikes you first is how compact it is. The furnace itself sits solid and unadorned on the riverbank, and there's something rather moving about seeing the metal-working scars on the stone, evidence of actual labour from the late 1600s. Casual visitors might find twenty minutes enough; history buffs could easily spend longer picking over the structural details and imagining the processes that happened here.
