Dernford Reservoir

The water at Dernford catches the light in a way that makes you forget you're just five miles outside Cambridge. It's a proper working reservoir, not some manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards at every turn - which is exactly why it works. You get serious birdwatchers here with their tripods and notebooks, scanning the water for grebes and warblers. The paths are straightforward, flat enough for a casual walk but nowhere near as crowded as some of the reserves closer to the city centre.

Winter brings different birds entirely. Come spring and the whole place transforms with nesting activity. The walk takes anything from 45 minutes to a couple of hours depending on how much you want to potter about with binoculars. Families with young kids will find it manages fine for an afternoon outing - the reservoir itself is the main draw, and there's enough open space that children can run about without getting into trouble.

If you're staying at Shepreth Mill just down the road, this makes a natural morning excursion before heading back for lunch. The combination of a proper working site and genuine wildlife habitat gives it a different feel from the polished nature reserves dotted around the county. It's honest and direct - come for the birds and the water, don't expect gift shops or themed trails. That's its appeal.
