Den Woods

Walk into Den Woods and you're immediately swallowed by something properly wild - towering Scots pines, birch trees twisted at odd angles, and the sort of silence that makes you realise how much noise there normally is. It's genuine old-growth woodland just outside Keith, the kind of place where you half expect to bump into a deer round every bend.

The forest floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with needles and moss. There are informal paths threading through, though nothing too manicured - you get the sense you're walking through proper forest rather than a managed visitor attraction. In spring the place is alive with birdsong and emerging bluebells; autumn brings that particular burnt-orange light filtering through the canopy.

It's brilliant for anyone who wants a proper walk without needing to head for the hills. Kids won't find attractions or facilities here, but that's rather the point - you're getting unvarnished woodland, not a theme park with trees. Expect to spend an hour wandering, maybe more if you're the type who stops to look at things. Walkers and nature types will absolutely get it; families wanting playgrounds or cafes should look elsewhere.

The woodland is free to access, as far as we could tell - no gates, no charges. It slots nicely into a Highlands break: base yourself at Hillhead Hideaways just three miles away, or try Cairnty Lodges if you want something more indulgent with hot tubs. Either way, Den Woods gives you that genuine forest experience without needing to trek halfway up a mountain.
