Deerpark Wood

The woodland paths through Deerpark Wood are genuinely peaceful - you won't find crowds here, which is half the appeal. It's a proper forest walk just outside Huntly, with mature trees creating that lovely dappled light effect even on grey Scottish days. The trails wind through mixed woodland, and if you're lucky you might spot red squirrels or roe deer, though I wouldn't bank on it. Allow a solid hour minimum if you want to do the main circuit without rushing. Longer if you prefer to dawdle.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as a break from driving or as a morning stretch when you're staying at Huntly Castle Holiday Park nearby. Families with young kids will find it manageable enough - paths are generally decent underfoot, though they can get muddy after rain, which is pretty much always in Aberdeenshire. Teenagers might find it a bit dull unless they're into photography or birdwatching.

The real draw is the quiet. No gift shop, no facilities that I could find, no faffing about. Just trees and fresh air. It's free to walk, as you'd expect, and there's parking near the entrance. Worth combining with a visit to Huntly itself if you're in the area - the castle and town centre are only a few minutes away. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want any chance of spotting wildlife. Winter's actually decent here when everything's bare and you can see further into the wood.
