Deer and Troll

You'll find yourself in front of a working artist's studio and gallery just outside Dronfield, where the work on the walls actually means something because the person who made it is often in the room. Deer and Troll is the kind of place that catches you off guard - it's not trying to be anything other than what it is: a space where an artist makes things and shows them to people.

The gallery itself focuses on contemporary work, and the aesthetic is deliberately unpretentious. You're looking at proper art here, not twee prints or merchandise designed to shift units. The deer and troll theme runs through much of what's on display, but it's never heavy-handed about it. Visiting artists also show their work, so what's on the walls shifts regularly enough that repeat visits make sense.

This is genuinely the sort of place that works best for people who actually enjoy talking to artists about their practice. If you're after a quick Instagram moment, you'll be disappointed. If you're someone who gets a kick out of stumbling into creative spaces and having an actual conversation, you'll find it worthwhile.

For a caravan break in the area, it fits nicely between time at Rother Valley Country Park or Waleswood Caravan & Camping Park. Pop in for an hour or so, have a proper look around, maybe ask about what inspired a particular piece. Plan for 45 minutes to an hour depending on how chatty you're feeling. Best on quieter days when you're not sharing the space with school groups.
