Deep Sea World

The underwater tunnel at Deep Sea World is genuinely unsettling in the best way - sharks glide overhead while you walk beneath reinforced acrylic, their bellies close enough that you feel properly small. It's based just outside Dunfermline in Fife, and it's the sort of place that sticks with you long after you've left.

You're walking through a proper aquarium, not just peering at tanks from the outside. The main draw is that tunnel experience, but there's plenty more: rays, seahorses, jellyfish, tropical fish in vivid colours. Kids will be transfixed, especially the younger ones who haven't figured out yet that sharks are meant to be scary. Teenagers might find it bit slow if they're not into marine life, but the tunnel usually holds their attention.

Allow a couple of hours if you're being thorough, though you could dash round in 45 minutes if you're short on time. It's not massive, which is fine - you won't leave exhausted. The tank feeding sessions are worth catching if you can time it right; watching the staff work around the sharks is tense stuff.

If you're staying at Green Oak Nature Retreat nearby, this works as a solid half-day out, especially if the Scottish weather turns grim. It's not going to blow your mind if you've been to bigger aquariums, but the tunnel makes it different enough to warrant the trip. Entry isn't cheap, but it's fairly standard for UK attractions of this type.
