Dean Wood

You'll find Dean Wood just outside Pevensey, a proper Sussex woodland that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. Ancient beech and oak trees tower overhead, with patches of bracken and bluebells depending on the season. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but quiet enough that you might not see another soul for twenty minutes at a time.

This is walkers' territory, really. The terrain rolls gently - nothing that'll wreck your knees - and you could easily spend two hours meandering without feeling like you've rushed it. Families with primary-school-age kids do well here; there's enough woodland atmosphere to feel like an adventure, without requiring marathon legs. Bring wellies in winter. In spring, the bluebell show is genuinely worth timing a visit around.

No shops, no visitor centre, no charge. Just woods. The nearest proper facilities are back in Pevensey itself, so plan accordingly. Warren Wood Country Park sits just three miles away, which makes combining both into a single day entirely doable - you could walk Dean Wood in the morning and then head to Warren Wood if the kids still have energy left. It's the kind of place that works best if you're staying locally rather than driving in specially, though it's not a wasted trip if you do.

Go on a weekday morning if possible. Weekends bring the dog walkers out in force, which changes the mood entirely.
