Daventry Reservoir Spillway

The spillway at Daventry Reservoir is where things get interesting if you're into water engineering and wildlife in equal measure. It's essentially a controlled overflow system - when water levels rise, the spillway channels excess water away, and it's genuinely impressive to watch during heavy rain or snowmelt. The reservoir itself sprawls across 450 acres, making it one of the largest in the Midlands, and the surrounding wetland habitat has become a proper haven for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

Walking the perimeter gives you access to decent viewing points, particularly along the eastern bank where you can spot grebes, cormorants, and if you're lucky, winter visiting wildfowl. It's not a dramatic landscape - no mountains or clifftop drama here - but there's something quietly satisfying about watching herons work the shallows or seeing dragonflies skim the surface on a summer afternoon. Allow a couple of hours for a proper explore; longer if you've brought binoculars.

This works well as part of a broader countryside stay in the area. If you're camped at Hideaway Wood Farm or Whitefeather Campsite - both within easy striking distance - the reservoir gives you somewhere to stretch your legs that doesn't require booking or paying entry fees.
