Darwin

The Darwin gallery in Cambridge is housed within the University Museum of Zoology, and it's a proper tribute to the man who changed how we see life on earth. You'll find displays covering his voyage aboard the Beagle, specimens he collected, and the work that led to On the Origin of Species - all presented without the stuffiness you might expect from an academic institution.

What strikes you first is how hands-on it all feels. Rather than just reading labels, you can examine actual specimens Darwin studied, see sketches from his notebooks, and understand the thinking behind his theories through objects rather than walls of text. It's engaging enough that teenagers won't be dragging their feet, though younger children might find it dense after 45 minutes or so.

Admission is free, which makes it an easy add-on to a Cambridge visit. Allow a solid hour if you want to read properly, or 30 minutes for a quick spin. The museum sits within the university grounds just east of Cambridge's centre - easily reachable on foot or a short bus ride from the town.

If you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby - Cherry Hinton is closest at just over two miles out - this works well as a rainy-day activity or a cultural breather between punting and college hopping. It's not a day-long attraction, but it's worth the detour if you've got any curiosity about natural history or Darwin himself.
