Darracott Reservoir

The water at Darracott catches the light in a way that makes you forget how small it actually is. Tucked away near Bideford in North Devon, this reservoir feels more like someone's well-kept secret than a tourist spot, which is precisely why it's worth the short drive from the coast.

It's essentially a proper walking destination rather than a swimming lake or water sports hub. The reservoir itself is managed by South West Lakes Trust, and the main draw is the path that runs around it - peaceful, relatively flat, and takes about an hour if you're not stopping constantly to stare at the water. The surrounding countryside rolls gently, and on a clear day you get decent views across the moorland beyond.

Families with young walkers will manage this without complaints. It's not demanding, and there's something about having a body of water to follow that keeps kids engaged better than a random moorland trudge. History buffs might find the industrial heritage interesting - these reservoirs tell the story of Victorian engineering - but don't expect interpretation boards or visitor facilities.

There's no charge as far as I can tell, and you won't need to book. Come on a weekday if possible; weekends draw locals who've clearly got the same idea about escape. The nearby Owl Valley Glamping is comfortable enough if you're basing yourself in the area, though Bideford itself offers more in the way of proper accommodation and restaurants. Late morning is ideal - light's good, and you'll avoid the afternoon bustle.
