Dark Bank

Dark Bank is a proper woodland walk through North Yorkshire forest just outside Northallerton - the sort of place where locals go but visitors somehow miss. It's a small, unassuming patch of ancient woodland that rewards a quiet afternoon if you're staying nearby at Whorlton Pods or Cote Ghyll Caravan Park.

The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter. You're walking beneath established hardwoods - mostly oak and beech - with light filtering through in that particular way that makes you want to stay longer than planned. There's a stream running through parts of it, which is enough to keep things interesting without being dramatic. The paths are well-trodden but narrow, so expect to pick your way through rather than stride confidently.

This works best for people who actually like woodland walks rather than those wanting a quick photo stop. Children will either love the fallen logs and small streams or find it dull - depends on the kid, really. Walkers heading out from Northallerton might easily combine it with the surrounding Teesdale countryside. Timing-wise, spring and autumn are when it properly comes alive - bluebells in spring, a decent show of colour in September. Summer can feel a bit close and airless under the canopy. Worth the detour if you're in the area for a few days and want something low-key between bigger attractions.
