Daniels Wood

The Forest of Dean sprawls across Gloucestershire like something from a fairy tale, and Daniels Wood sits within it - a proper woodland walk that feels remote even when you're only a few miles from Gloucester. Ancient oaks and beech trees create a cathedral-like canopy, the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than traffic.

It's straightforward woodland walking territory. The paths wind through dense forest, crossing streams and opening into clearings where the light suddenly floods in. Nothing dramatic happens here - there are no folly towers or viewpoint benches - but that's rather the point. You're walking through old English woodland much as it would have been for centuries.

History types will appreciate the sense of deep time among these trees. Families with young children get a solid hour or two of fresh air and exploring, though there's no playground infrastructure to speak of. Serious walkers can happily spend half a day threading through connected trails. If the kids are past the "are we there yet" stage, they'll genuinely enjoy spotting wildlife and clambering over fallen logs.

Come in spring when the bluebells are thick on the ground, or autumn when the light turns golden and the leaves crunch underfoot. Summer can feel a bit airless under all that canopy. Allow at least ninety minutes if you're doing a proper circuit.

It pairs naturally with the nearby glamping and caravan sites - Baldwin's Brook and Apple Orchard are both well-rated and close enough for a morning or afternoon woodland outing. Free access, no facilities, real forest quiet.
