Daniel's Wood

Walking into Daniel's Wood near Dursley feels like stepping into proper woodland - the kind where you actually lose phone signal and remember why you came. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, with dense tree cover, uneven paths, and that green-filtered light that makes everything feel a bit removed from the world.

What you get here is straightforward woodland walking. There are trails threading through the trees, though nothing particularly signposted or managed. It's the sort of place you explore at your own pace, pushing through bracken and listening to whatever's moving about in the undergrowth. On a quiet morning it's properly atmospheric. On a bank holiday weekend it gets busier, which dulls the magic a bit.

This works best for people who actually like forests rather than those after manicured park walks. If your kids need facilities and ice cream vans, they'll be disappointed. But if they're the sort who'll build dens and hunt for interesting sticks, they'll be in heaven for hours.

Access appears to be free and there's no obvious visitor centre. Allow at least an hour, longer if you're the type to wander without a plan. It sits nicely within striking distance of the caravan parks nearby - Pepper Pot is barely up the road at 1.4 miles, which makes it dead convenient for a morning woodland ramble before heading elsewhere in the area.
