Dalkeith Country Park

The grounds here are genuinely vast - 1,200 acres of woodland, riverside walks and open parkland that feels properly remote despite being just outside Musselburgh. You're not stumbling into some manicured tourist trap; this is a working country estate with real trees, water features and the kind of space where you can actually lose an hour without seeing another soul.

The River Esk runs through it, which is the main draw for most visitors. There are established paths - some gentle, some a bit more demanding - that follow the water, and if you time it right (spring's best) you'll catch the place looking genuinely lovely. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. The woodland sections are darker and more atmospheric than you'd expect for somewhere so close to a town.

It's ideal for walking parties and families who don't need constant activity or facilities. Kids will either love the river scrambling or find it a bit dull after an hour, depending on age. Serious hikers can make a half-day of it. There's an old Victorian bridge worth seeing, though it's not a heritage showcase - you're here for the landscape, not the stories.

If you're based at Drummohr Camping & Glamping Site nearby, this makes a solid half-day outing. Allow at least two to three hours if you want to explore properly rather than just walk the perimeter. The admission is straightforward and sensibly priced. Winter can be muddy; wear boots.
