Cypress Pond sits just outside Castlewellan, a quiet spot that doesn't get mobbed with visitors the way some of the bigger attractions in the Mourne area do. It's a straightforward walk around the water, nothing strenuous, and the path is generally well-maintained underfoot. You'll spot the odd angler, some walkers with dogs. The reflections on calm days are lovely, though if you're after dramatic mountain views, you'll want to push on towards the Mournes proper.

This works well for families who've had enough of more structured activities - kids can burn energy without anyone needing to worry about sheer drops or difficult terrain. It's also a solid option if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Slieve Croob or Windsor and fancy a gentle morning stroll before breakfast. Allow forty minutes to an hour to walk it properly, longer if you're the type to stop and actually look at things.

The attraction itself is free, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no facilities - so come prepared. Castlewellan is your nearest proper town if you need supplies. Best visited early in the day or late afternoon; midday can feel a bit soulless. It's a nice supporting act on a Mourne holiday rather than a headline attraction, but sometimes that's exactly what you need.
