The cycle routes threading through Ceredigion aren't exactly signposted like a theme park - you'll find coloured waymarkers dotted along quiet lanes and bridleways that wind between Aberystwyth and the surrounding valleys. This is proper countryside cycling, the kind where you actually have to pay attention to small painted arrows rather than follow a paved superhighway.

What you get depends entirely on which route you pick. Some trails hug the coast with views across Cardigan Bay, others dip inland through forestry and farmland where you might not see another person for hours. The markers themselves are reassuringly present when you need them, though occasionally you'll second-guess whether that faded blob on a fence post is genuinely the way or just an old weather-beaten paint stain. It's half the charm, really.

Cyclists with reasonable fitness will find plenty to occupy a full day, easily stringing together multiple routes. Families with younger riders might prefer the flatter valley sections - the steep climbs up from Aberystwyth itself are genuinely punishing if you've got small legs pedalling. Allow anything from two hours for a gentle loop to a full day if you're chaining routes together.
