Cwm Cadlan Nature Reserve

The valley closes in around you as you push deeper into Cwm Cadlan, and suddenly you understand why locals keep quiet about this place. It's a proper woodland reserve tucked into the Powys hills above Neath, the sort of spot where the only sounds are your footsteps and water running over stone.

This is working land, not a polished visitor attraction. You get old-growth oak and ash, streams that cut through fern-thick banks, and the occasional glimpse of a pied flycatcher if you're lucky enough. The walking routes are straightforward enough - nothing that'll knacker you, but enough gradient to feel like you've earned the peace when you sit down.

It suits people who actually want to walk, not snap photos and leave. Serious birders come here. Families with older kids can manage it without drama. Photographers might spend half a day picking through light and shadow on the forest floor. If you're expecting manicured paths and interpretation boards, you'll be disappointed - that's not the point.

There's no visitor centre or catering, so bring what you need. Free access as far as I can tell, though facilities are minimal. Give yourself at least two hours to do it properly, longer if you're the lingering type.
