Curlets Mountain

Standing at 573 metres, this modest peak offers proper views across County Down without the tourist hordes that swarm neighbouring Slieve Donard. The summit rewards hikers with sweeping panoramas over the Mourne Mountains and down to the Irish Sea - on a clear day you can spot the Isle of Man. It's not the highest mountain in the range, but that works in its favour.

Walkers will find the ascent challenging but manageable, though it's definitely not one for the family stroll crowd. The terrain can be boggy in places and the weather changes fast up here, so proper gear is essential. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from the nearest parking.

From Castlewellan, it's a relatively straightforward drive to the starting points, making it well worth considering if you're staying at any of the camping spots around Tollymore Forest Park. The mountain pairs brilliantly with exploring the forest trails - you could easily fill a long weekend with outdoor activities in this corner of the Mournes.

Seasoned hikers will appreciate the solitude compared to busier peaks, while families with older children who fancy a proper challenge will find it rewarding. Just don't expect facilities at the top - this is raw mountain walking at its finest.
