Cundall Dog Park

Your dog has probably never had it so good. Cundall Dog Park, just outside Thirsk, is a proper off-lead haven - acres of open ground where your spaniel or terrier can actually run without a lead attached. There's no pretense here, no fancy facilities or Instagram backdrops. It's just space, grass, and the sound of dogs doing what dogs do best.

The site works brilliantly because it's genuinely large enough that dogs don't crash into each other every five minutes. You get a real sense of the animals being able to move, stretch, and burn off some of that boundless energy. If you've got a pooch that's been cooped up on the drive north, this is the place to let them loose for an hour.

Practically speaking, bring a ball or two - the open expanse means your throw can actually carry. Allow a solid hour minimum if you want your dog properly worn out, longer if you've got multiple animals or if you're not in a rush. There's nothing fancy here, no cafe or shop, so come prepared with water and maybe a coffee in a flask.

If you're based at Woodland Lakes Lodges or The Hideaway at Baxby Manor nearby, this makes an easy detour on your North Yorkshire holiday. It's the sort of place that owners love more than the dogs do, if you're honest - proper chance to chat with other people while the animals entertain themselves. Not essential if your holiday is dog-free, but genuinely useful if you've brought the family pet.
