Cullerlie Stone Circle

Five thousand years old and still standing in a field near Garlogie - that's what gets you about Cullerlie Stone Circle. Eight stones arranged in a rough circle, some knee-high, others barely up to your waist, they're modest by stone circle standards but absolutely worth the detour if you're in Aberdeenshire.

You can walk right up to them. No fences, no gift shop, no interpretive panels telling you what to think. Just eight Bronze Age rocks and the Grampian hills in the distance. The circle itself takes five minutes to walk around, but the real draw is standing in the middle and trying to imagine who put these here and why. Ritual site? Burial marker? Astronomical alignment? The truth is nobody knows for certain, and that ambiguity is rather brilliant.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from a visit - bringing a book on prehistoric Scotland helps. Kids under ten might find it a bit abstract; there's no story to grab hold of, just old stones. But walkers heading through the area should absolutely swing by. It's not far off the main routes, and the surrounding countryside is proper lovely.

Free to visit, accessible year-round. Plan on twenty minutes unless you're the type to sit and soak it in. If you're based at Deeside Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. The site itself is remote and quiet - go early if you want solitude.
