Cullen Ferguson's Rock

A granite outcrop sticking up from the moorland near Buckie, Cullen Ferguson's Rock is one of those Scottish landmarks that doesn't announce itself - you have to know where to look. The rock itself is modest in size but sits with proper presence against the rolling Aberdeenshire landscape, and the walk out to it takes you through proper wild country.

Historically it marks a significant spot in the area's past, though the details have become hazy over time - which somehow makes it more appealing than a marker with everything spelled out. What draws people here is partly the sense of discovery, partly the views back towards the coast and the surrounding hills. On a clear day you can see for miles. In the mist, it's atmospheric in that way only Scottish moorland can be.

This works best for walkers rather than casual visitors - it's not a five-minute car park stroll. Allow a good hour for the walk and to sit about a bit. There's no charge and no facilities out here, so bring your own supplies. If you're basing yourself at Sandend Holidays during their April to October season, this makes for a decent half-day outing that separates you from the busier coastal spots. It's the sort of place that appeals to people who prefer their Scotland without the crowds, and who don't mind a bit of rough terrain underfoot.
