Culachy Forest

The trees here are proper tall - Douglas firs and spruces rising up from the forest floor in that dark, quiet way that makes you feel small. Culachy Forest sits just outside Fort Augustus, close enough for a half-day visit but far enough to feel like you've actually escaped. It's a working forest managed by Forestry and Land Scotland, which means the paths are well-maintained and the whole thing feels safe even when you're deep in among the trees.

There are a few trails threading through here, ranging from gentle woodland walks to steeper sections that'll get your lungs going. On a grey Highland day - and there are plenty of those - the gloom between the trees can feel atmospheric rather than gloomy. Walkers will genuinely enjoy this, particularly those who like a bit of proper forest rather than manicured park paths. Families with kids who don't need constant entertainment will find it decent; older children can manage the terrain without fuss.

It's free to access, and you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes on a quick loop to two hours if you tackle the longer routes. Summer is marginally better for visibility, but honestly any time works if you dress right.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Loch Ness Highland Resort is only a couple of miles away - this makes sense as a morning activity before heading to Fort Augustus town itself. The Loch Ness Holiday Park sits further out but is worth knowing about. Culachy won't blow your mind, but it's a solid, no-fuss woodland walk that genuinely feels like the Highlands rather than a tourist tick-box.
