Cucumber Wood

Cucumber Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Henley-on-Thames, the sort of place where you can shake off a morning at the riverside and actually feel like you've gone somewhere. The trees are thick enough that you lose the sound of traffic within minutes, and there's a genuine network of paths that reward a bit of exploration rather than just a quick lap.

It's best suited to walkers who don't need dramatic views or historical plaques to justify the trip. Families with kids old enough to manage muddy terrain will find it decent for an hour or so, though there's nothing dramatic enough to hold attention for much longer. The wood itself is unremarkable in the best way - no rare specimens, no Instagram moments, just honest Oxfordshire woodland doing what it does.

The practical reality: allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which path you take. We went in autumn when the light filters properly through the canopy, which made it worth the walk. Summer could be claustrophobic with all the green. It's free to access, though there's limited parking nearby so go early or midweek if you can.

If you're based at Swiss Farm or Embers Camping, this sits nicely between a proper woodland stomp and the obvious Henley riverside attractions. It's close enough for an afternoon slot but far enough that you're not treading the same ground as everyone else bumbling about the town. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't rearrange your holiday to visit.
