Cucumber Plantation

The Cucumber Plantation is a proper slice of Oxfordshire woodland, a few miles outside Henley-on-Thames. It's a working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction, so don't expect signage or facilities - just trees, paths, and the kind of quiet you rarely find near the Home Counties.

Walkers will get the most from this place. There's genuine woodland to explore, proper footing underfoot, and enough acreage to lose an hour or two without feeling like you're going in circles. The canopy is dense enough to offer real shelter on drizzly days, which matters if you're camping locally. Families with kids aged eight upwards will find it worthwhile; younger ones might struggle with the lack of obvious waymarks or attractions.

Access appears to be free, though it's sensible to check before you arrive - details online are thin on the ground. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to walk it properly rather than just potter about for half an hour.

It slots well into a wider Henley exploration. Swiss Farm Touring and Camping sits just 4.2 miles away and is highly rated, while Embers Camping offers another solid option at 5.3 miles. The forest makes a good morning walk before heading into town for lunch by the Thames. It's the sort of place that proves you don't need visitor centres and cafés to make a woodland worthwhile - sometimes trees are enough.
