Cuckney Dam

The water at Cuckney Dam sits perfectly still on a good day, ringed by woodland that's thick enough to feel properly remote despite being barely ten minutes from Mansfield. It's a working reservoir rather than a tourist attraction, so don't expect facilities or visitor centres - just a decent walk around the perimeter and some genuinely pleasant views if you time it right.

The dam itself is a modest concrete affair, but the setting lifts it. Walkers get the most out of it - there's a circular route that takes the better part of an hour if you don't dawdle, and it's easy enough for families with school-age kids without being tedious for adults. The water's clear enough to spot fish on calmer days, and you'll likely have the place to yourself, which is increasingly rare. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the tree cover attracts decent numbers of woodland species.

You're looking at free admission - it's not gated or monitored. Go midweek if possible to avoid the handful of locals who use it as their weekend spot. The real value comes from pairing it with Clumber Park, which is only five miles away and frankly offers more to do if you've got children in tow. The National Trust site has proper grounds, a lake of its own, and way more infrastructure. Cuckney works best as a quieter morning walk before heading to Clumber for lunch and proper facilities. It's worth the detour if you like woodland walks and don't mind the lack of creature comforts.
